Handmade Ceramics, Product Information & Returns Policy

At Mervyn Gers Ceramics, we believe that the beauty of handmade lies in its individuality.

Every piece is thoughtfully crafted in our Cape Town studio by skilled local artisans using locally sourced materials. From developing our own clay body and signature glazes, transfer printing to the final kiln firing, every stage of the process is carried out with care, experience and attention to detail.

Our ceramics are not mass-produced or factory-made. Each plate, bowl, platter and mug is individually shaped, glazed and kiln-fired, allowing every piece to develop its own unique character.

The Beauty of Handmade

Because every piece is made by hand, subtle variations in shape, size, weight, glaze, colour, texture and finish are a natural part of the making process. No two pieces will ever be exactly alike.

These individual characteristics are not imperfections. They are the hallmark of authentic handmade ceramics and the reason our work is chosen by leading chefs, luxury hotels, boutique retailers and discerning collectors around the world.

When purchasing Mervyn Gers Ceramics, we invite you to celebrate these natural variations as part of the beauty and authenticity of handmade craftsmanship.

Product Photography

We do our best to represent our products as accurately as possible.

The photographs on our website illustrate the shape, glaze and overall appearance of each collection. However, because every piece is handmade, the item you receive may vary slightly in glaze movement, colour tone, surface texture or finish from the photographs shown.

This individuality is an inherent characteristic of handmade ceramics and forms part of the unique appeal of every piece.

Product Quality

Our ceramics are designed for everyday living and are used in homes, restaurants, hotels and lodges throughout South Africa and internationally.

Unless otherwise stated on the individual product page, our ceramics are:

  • Food safe
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Microwave safe
  • Suitable for everyday domestic and hospitality use

While our ceramics are made to be durable, they should still be handled with reasonable care. Like all ceramic products, they may chip or break if dropped, subjected to impact or exposed to sudden extreme temperature changes.

Ordering Carefully

We encourage customers to choose carefully before placing an order.

Mervyn Gers Ceramics does not offer products on approval, trial, consignment or "appro". Each order is carefully picked, checked and packed by hand, and we therefore ask that customers purchase only the pieces they intend to keep.

If you require assistance selecting products before placing an order, our team will be delighted to help.

Returns & Exchanges

Subject to your rights under applicable South African consumer protection legislation, we are unable to accept returns or exchanges where:

  • you have changed your mind;
  • you ordered more items than required;
  • you prefer another size, glaze or shape after delivery;
  • the pieces vary naturally from one another;
  • the pieces differ slightly from the website photographs; or
  • you expected handmade pieces to be identical.

Natural variations in shape, glaze, colour, texture and finish are an expected characteristic of handmade ceramics and are part of what makes every Mervyn Gers piece unique.

If we agree to accept a return for any reason other than a defective, damaged or incorrect item, the customer is responsible for arranging and paying for the safe return of the goods to us, unless applicable law provides otherwise.

If you believe there is a problem with your order, please contact us within a reasonable time of delivery. We will review the matter promptly and work with you to find an appropriate solution in accordance with applicable South African consumer legislation.
